![]() ![]() It is good that a politician from the Left points this out. Speaking is indeed neglected in modern state education. This is done by reading widely and writing well, but also by learning to speak better. Matthew Arnold famously said that the purpose of culture was the pursuit of perfection by “getting to know …the best which has been thought and said in the world”.īy doing so, one improves one’s own thoughts and words. That he reserved for his article for The Sun on the same day, perhaps considering the word “oracy” too clever for Sun readers.īut Sir Keir’s thoughts about speaking should be taken seriously. Sir Keir’s accompanying article in Thursday’s Times did not include his speech’s attack on the “snobs” who undervalue vocational training. He also varies his words for different audiences. He plays down his own tax policy on independent schools which, if implemented, would be the most punitive that Labour has ever imposed. In Thursday’s speech, he quoted, with attribution and approval, Michael Gove’s famous words about “the soft bigotry of low expectations”. It is true that Sir Keir, who now follows the Blair/Mandelson glidepath to electoral victory with almost slavish devotion, is pitching to wavering Conservative voters. Critics point out that, by highlighting oracy, he is avoiding discussion of more immediate educational problems, notably the alleged need for more money and higher pay for striking teachers. Some of Sir Keir’s words have been received rather cynically. It enables a pupil to “break the class ceiling”, he thinks. Being able to speak clearly and argue cogently “opens up a lifetime of empowerment”. The Labour leader wants to add “oracy” to numeracy and literacy as one of the key skills mastered at school. ![]() So, more or less, said Sir Keir Starmer on Thursday. ‘Speak the speech, I pray you, as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue,” says Hamlet to the actor. ![]()

![]() We've heard that the new 11th-gen CPUs perform really well in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, leaving their Zen 3 competitors in the dust. We tested with the new Metro Exodus Enhanced version and found that despite being able to push well over 100 fps even at 1440p, thanks to variable rate shading, the CPU played virtually no role here, or rather, these two 8-core CPUs are powerful enough that it makes no difference. Though it was highly repeatable, so the Intel processor is somehow imposing a tiny performance penalty, though in actual gameplay the difference is meaningless. Of course, we're talking about a disparity of just 1 fps. Interestingly, a similar delta is seen at all three tested resolutions, even at 4K. Watch Dogs: Legion is another game where the Ryzen processor is faster but by a meaningless 2% margin. Playing Horizon Zero Dawn, the 5800X was 2% faster at 1080p, which is a negligible difference, especially with both CPUs enabling well over 100 fps at all times. That is to say, for the most part they're really close. To start things off, we'll look at a few games that represent the kind of performance margins we typically see between these two processors when gaming. We'll look at detailed data for about a dozen titles and then get into the usual performance breakdown with all the games. In total, we tested 32 games at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. Our motherboards of choice, for the AM4 platform we have the MSI X570 Unify running the latest BIOS and for the LGA1200 platform the Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Master, using the latest BIOS, and of course, the latest display drivers and Windows 10. That's the memory, and that means we won't be using the typical CL14 3200 kit for this benchmark.įor the GPU, we're not using a GeForce RTX 3090 either, and the reason is that the Radeon RX 6900 XT is simply much faster at 1080p.Īlthough we've also tested at 1440p and 4K, 1080p is really where we're able to compare CPU performance as it helps to reduce the GPU bottleneck. ![]() We've got our hands on a high quality G.Skill TridentZ Neo 32GB kit and it's very impressive. ![]() ![]() There's also the discounted previous generation 10700K at $330, though we won't be looking at that today.īefore we get to the results, a few quick words on today's test setup.īoth CPUs have been tested using DDR4-3800 CL14 memory. Then we have the Core i7-11700K which is a brand new product and has only been available for about 2 months now, currently selling for $399.įor the price, the Core i7-11700K should offer more than decent value and certainly nothing like the i9-11900K, which in this generation is essentially a binned version of the same chip to be sold for $600. Timing couldn't be better for this comparison, since Intel's 11th-gen Core is readily available and from what we've heard AMD is finally flooding the market with Zen 3 CPUs, so buying a 5800X should be a lot easier than it's been since release.Īs of writing, the Ryzen 5800X is selling for around $420 and it appears to be in stock just about everywhere, so things are looking promising. Today we've got a classic head to head CPU battle in our hands, with a comparison between the Ryzen 7 5800X and Core i7-11700K, both of which are 8-core, 16-thread CPUs that cost around $400. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Very annoying and I still for the life of me can't figure this one out. Cabin Fever is a 2016 American horror film directed by Travis Zariwny (under the pseudonym Travis Z) and written by Eli Roth. I also had an issue with the most gruesome action scenes where I had a hard time understanding what was happening. Sean Astin is good, but his part is small and his lines are cliché. The security issues around a facility of that nature are laughable at best and the people working there seem to be hired on a good-looks basis only. The virus reacts so differently from a person to another that it's just ridiculous how one victim gets Deadly sick within a few minutes while others take hours before having serious symptoms. The plot is thin, the pace is slow, the horror is limited, the characters are not interesting and most of what happens makes little to no sense once you have accepted that the disease is real. While control groups like waiting list (WL) or psychological placebo control for spontaneous remission and/or nonspecific effects, the concept of TAU is to additionally indicate if a new treatment is as good or better than current standard treatments (i.e., the comparative efficacy of new treatments). In TAU – sometimes referred to as care as usual, standard care, or routine care – participants receive existing treatments accessible in their community or health care system. According to a recent systematic review, treatment as usual (TAU) is the most frequently used control/comparison group in trials of psychotherapy for depression. New or improved treatments have to demonstrate their efficacy, typically by being tested in a randomized controlled trial, where they are compared to one of several control groups and/or an alternative treatment. However, findings of a substantial proportion of nonresponders to psychotherapy, of a high risk for relapse for some subgroups, and of limited access to psychotherapy necessitate further research efforts on how existing treatment approaches can be improved and supplemented. Psychotherapy is a first-line specialized treatment for depressive disorders according to treatment guidelines, and has a large database that documents its efficacy. More scrutiny in the design of control groups for clinical trials is recommended. ![]() Conclusions: Our results suggest that variation in TAU intensity impacts the outcome of trials. Psychotherapy effects against lower intensity TAU did not differ from effects against WL (two-sided p = 0.663). Psychotherapy effects were significantly smaller (one-sided p = 0.002) in trials with higher intensity TAU (SMD = 0.324, CI 0.209 to 0.439) than in trials with lower intensity TAU (SMD = 0.628, CI 0.455 to 0.801). Control group intensity predicted trial results in preregistered (one-sided p s < 0.042) and exploratory analyses. Results: We included 89 trials randomizing 14,474 patients to 113 psychotherapy conditions and 89 control groups (TAU in 42 trials, WL in 47 trials). Primary outcome: Standardized mean difference (SMD) of psychotherapy and control in depressive symptoms at treatment termination. Six indicators were used to assess control group intensity. Methods: We conducted a preregistered meta-analysis ( We included trials comparing psychotherapy with TAU or WL in patients with symptoms of unipolar depression. Objective: We investigated the impact of control group intensity (i.e., amount and degree to which elements of common depression treatments are provided) on the effects of face-to-face and internet-based psychotherapy for depression. ![]() Concerns have been raised that the heterogeneity of treatments in TAU leads to biased estimates of psychotherapy efficacy and to an unclear difference between TAU and control groups like waiting list (WL). I’ve used both Jackery’s 60W solar panels and 100W solar panels before, and they’re convenient for this use. There’s of course a standard 12V charge port that works with the Jackery’s included wall charger, or you can go for bonus points by charging it from the sun with a solar panel. And I can even charge the Jackery 300 unit using USB-C as well, meaning I don’t have to bring the Jackery’s own charger if I have my laptop charger with me already. That USB-C port is powerful enough to charge my MacBook quickly, which is great for when I’m working from the road and need a charge in the car or in the field. I also get great use out of the USB charge ports, with a pair of old school USB A ports as well as a USB-C PD 60W port. I haven’t had the need to test that myself, but since it will run any 300W or less device that would normally plug into a wall outlet, a CPAP machine is obviously well within its limits. One of the most common devices I hear about other people using it for is a CPAP machine while camping. Remember, this is a compact battery – which is part of its charm. I sometimes use it to top off my e-bike batteries, but it will usually only do around a half charge on high-capacity e-bike batteries. When I want to spend a whole day working outdoors or charge a few of my e-bikes during a long day of riding, I turn to Jackery’s bigger batteries. Having spent some time with the Jackery Explorer 300, I can already tell you that this pint-sized battery offers all the utility of Jackery’s larger units, but in a more affordable and compact device.
